Choosing the Right Hiking Boots

Before you start your search for the perfect outdoor or hiking boots, consider what purpose they are first going to serve. For example, are you a casual weekend rambler or a serious mountain climber?

If you like to keep your outdoor exercise on the casual side, then you many only need a pair of lightweight and low hiking shoes. These are basically more like trainers, however they have added traction for hiking without the weight of typical hiking boots. Please note that if you have weak lower legs or ankles, hiking shoes may not be appropriate. Furthermore if the terrain is likely to be particularly rugged, then boots may be the best option.

Another point to consider is how much weight you are carrying with you. If you are traveling light then again hiking shoes may be a good solution, however if you are carrying a big backpack for an overnight stay then the support of good hiking boots will be required to help support the weight on your feet and ankles. Hiking boots also offer more protection to your feet than shoes.

There are many different types of hiking shoe and boots available today and leather boots provide more protection and support than fabric or synthetic boots and shoe. This is not always true however and synthetic materials can be lighter and offer your feet more room to breathe.

When you try any walking boots or shoes on do so wearing your thick socks to ensure a good fit. Make sure that the footwear does not rub against your toes or back heel and that your foot does not slip up and down the sole on an incline.

Boots in particularly may feel quite stiff at first but once they have been used a little they will become softer and possibly more comfortable. Comfort is the most important aspect to consider when buying any shoe or hiking boot so ensure your foot fits snugly first.

Happy hiking!
