gold coast australia

The southern end of the State of Queensland on the eastern coast of Australia exhibits some of the finest surfing beaches anywhere in the world. The city of Gold Coast presides over 70 kilometers of these fine beaches, and it’s no wonder gold coast holidays are so popular with the surfing set.

Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise is the most iconic of the Gold Coast Beaches, and is so named for the hotel built by James Cavil in 1925, which started a tourism trend for the area that has never let up. This beach is easy to access and suitable to all levels of surfer experience.

Main Beach

Just to the north of Surfers Paradise lays Main Beach, appropriately named as the most-frequented and popular stretch of beach for those on gold coast holidays. Access is easy, with consistent swells and both right and left hand breaks. Main Beach is suitable for all surfers.

South Stradbroke Island

Situated at the northern end of Gold Coast, South Stradbroke Island is known for the hundreds of wild wallabies that have become unusually human-friendly and are known for stealing food from campers. The southern end of the island is a prime surfing location with right and left breaks and is known locally as “The Other Side,” or “T.O.S.”

The Spit

Southport Spit, known colloquially as “The Spit,” lies to the north of Main Beach and Surfers Paradise on a permanent sand spit. It is easy to get to and a popular surfing location due to the right and left beach breaks, great swells, and is generally suitable for all surfers.

Burleigh Heads

Located toward the south end of the Gold Coast beaches, Burleigh Heads is one of the premier surfing beaches in the world, with a right hand barreling point break and consistent swells up to 3 meters. Burleigh Heads sits in a curve of coastline between North Burleigh Beach and the Burleigh headland that juts out into the ocean. Access is fairly easy, and there are loads of amenities. Tough rock jumps and high swells make Burleigh Heads suitable for more experienced surfers.
